A Taste of Italy & Tennessee Hospitality
By Kara McCombs

I was a woman with a mission. Armed with a camera, a pen and a sugar-free, low-fat vanilla frappe, I was determined to give our readers a glimpse of Paris Winery through the lens of my camera. I am, at best, an amateur photographer, but when I arrived at the gates guarded by huge iron lions and saw the picturesque landscape of the vineyards along with the Venetian architecture of the tasting house, I was confident the pictures would almost take themselves.

The 45-minute drive to the 100-acre farm, located just seven miles outside of Paris, was shorter than I expected. As I stepped out of my car and admired the vista, I felt like I had been transported to Tuscany. The climate in Paris is actually very similar to that of Tuscany, which enables Lisa and Roger Ciarrochi to grow Italian vinifera, such as Sangiovese and Barbera.

LBL Nature station
Where the Wild Things Are

By Darlisha Stanfield

“Our mission is to foster understanding, appreciation and responsible use of the resources of the LBL,” said School Program Coordinator Aviva Yasgur, who has worked at the Nature Station for eight years. “We try to educate visitors in a fun way. During their visits, we teach them about native plants and animals and how they should behave toward nature.”

The anticipation builds while traveling LBL's long, winding road, called The Trace, to reach the Nature Station. Children of all ages are revving with energy and curiosity. The trip begins with the Indoor Discovery Center, home to seven different snake species, five different turtle species, flying squirrels, two salamanders, a fence lizard, a working colony of European honeybees, several different frog and toad species, and mounted animal exhibits. The indoor discovery center is also home to the theater where Nature Station tours begin with a guide, such as Aviva, who prepares tour groups for their adventure.

Birds on the Move
By Mary Schmidt

Watching bird migration take place is one of the most exciting times for a birder and novice alike, and it takes place in our own backyards in Murray and all across our region. Migration is defined as the movement of an animal from one place to another in response to changes in climate and food availability.

There are two defined migrations in birds: spring migration (March – June) when birds are returning to their nesting or summer grounds; and fall migration (August – November) when birds are returning to their wintering grounds. While not all birds migrate, such as the Northern Cardinal, many of the species present in our backyards are migratory, even though we see them all year.

Murray LifeCruising into a Comfortable Retirement
By: Ron Arant, a Financial Consultant for Hilliard & Lyons, Inc.

The future belongs to those who plan for it and good intentions will not finance a secure retirement. Why? Because other financial responsibilities loom over the American household and obligations such as mortgage payments and credit card debt often come first.

Unfortunately, Americans who don’t make retirement planning a priority are committing a major blunder, according to those in the know. A recent article in The Wall Street Journal pointed out “No matter what you think it will take to retire comfortably, it’s almost certain to be more.”

So how do you stay on track in securing your retirement goals?

Murray LifeWKMS: Hitting the Airwaves
By: Jessica Jeffress

If you take a look at the programming offered by Murray’s own radio station, WKMS 91.3 FM, you’ll find it is an eclectic mix. With programs from National Public Radio, Public Radio International and American Public Media, along with their local lineup, WKMS offers just about anything you could ever want in a radio station.

Located on the eighth floor of Murray State University’s Price Doyle Fine Arts Building, WKMS has been on the air for nearly 40 years. When Dr. Ray Mofield, who had been a professor of radio and television at Southern Illinois University, was hired by MSU as executive assistant to University President Ralph Woods in 1964, he was asked to create a department of communications, complete with a radio station. After much hard work, WKMS launched its first broadcast on May 11, 1970.
